SUTRA STUDY
SATURDAYS - 12 PM-1.30 PM GMT (UK time)
November 29-April 4
Patanjali teaches that Yoga=Samadhi - a profound state of absorption/concentration, which is beyond the capacity of most people. For this reason, Patanjali then offers several practices, including Ashtanga Yoga, as a means to create the physical/mental conditions that are required for achieving those higher/deeper stages of meditation.
The Yoga Sutra was the one text Pattabhi Jois advised his students to study in depth. He believed that enquiry into yoga philosophy was the ideal companion to developing a physical practice.
According to him, his Ashtanga Yoga method is “The Original Patanjali Method” - the method described in an ancient commentary on the Sutra known as the Yoga Korunta, in which every aspect about the way to practice was recorded in detail.
The traditional way to learn yoga is to study philosophy and theory while you develop the physical practice. The techniques and practices are described in these texts, and need to be explained in the context of the ultimate purpose of yoga. Technique is valuable, but a sense of direction is also required - this makes technique effective.

PRANAYAMA and MEDITATION
SATURDAYS - 1.45 PM - 2.45 PM GMT/UTC (UK time)
November 29-April 4
(no class January 3/10)
“Mind and breath are linked together. Like milk and water, once mixed, they cannot be separated. When the mind moves, the breath is unsteady, when the breath is unsteady the mind is agitated. When the breath is under control, the mind can be concentrated.” - Hatha Yoga Pradipika
What is meditation? Meditation is the conscious control of the mind: it is the effort to concentrate on one idea or thought and eliminate all other mental distractions.
The mind is intimately connected with the breath, and the primary tool for achieving concentration in yoga practice is through modifying the way one breathes. This conscious control of breathing is known as pranayama.
Pranayama is the key to preparing for meditation. Controlling the breath acts as guide for the mind - it channels the mind in a particular direction and eliminates distraction. At a certain point the breathing reduces to the absolute minimum activity and eventually stops - this accompanies the merging of the mind with its object and its ultimate dissolution.
"Pranayama acts on the mind in the same way a brake acts on a vehicle." - Sri Ramana Maharshi
There are many pranayamas. Some are utilized for correcting certain physical or mental disorders. In this class, however, a sequence of practices has been selected specifically to guide the practitioner towards a deep internal state of peace and concentration.
